At least 64 people lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's history.

Four security agents were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials stated. Over 80 people were taken into custody.

Intense confrontations commenced when about 2,500 police forces moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, igniting obstacles and dropping bombs from drones, officials stated.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "appalled" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The area of favelas adjacent to Rio's airport is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Local authorities confirmed no less than 50 of the fatalities were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Dozens of people were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Security forces reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the raid, together with numerous weapons.
