England's Assistant Coach Shares His Philosophy: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear.
Ten years back, Anthony Barry competed at a lower division club. Now, his attention is fixed to assist the England manager secure World Cup glory next summer. The road from athlete to trainer commenced through volunteering for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he was hooked. He realized his purpose.
Staggering Ascent
Barry's progression is incredible. Commencing in a senior role at Wigan, he developed a standing through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs took him to elite sides, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. He has worked with legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Currently, in the England setup, it’s full-time, the “pinnacle” according to him.
“Everything starts with a dream … Yet I'm convinced that dedication shifts obstacles. You have the dream but then you bring it down: ‘How do we do it, day-by-day, step-by-step?’ Our goal is the World Cup. But dreams won’t get it done. We have to build a structured plan enabling us to maximize our opportunities.”
Focus on Minutiae
Dedication, especially with the smallest details, characterizes his journey. Toiling around the clock under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo challenge limits. Their strategies feature mental assessments, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses the national team spirit and rejects terms like “international break”.
“It's not time off or a pause,” Barry says. “It was vital to establish a setup that attracts the squad and where they're challenged that going back is a relief.”
Driven Leaders
Barry describes himself along with the manager as highly ambitious. “Our goal is to master each element of play,” he declares. “We strive to own every metre of the pitch and that's our focus many of our days on. We must to not only anticipate of the trends but to beat them and create our own ones. This is continuous focused on finding solutions. And it’s to make the complex clear.
“There are 50 days alongside the squad before the World Cup finals. We have to play a complex game that gives us a tactical advantage and we must clarify it in our 50 days with them. It’s to take it from thought to data to understanding to action.
“To develop a process enabling productivity in that window, we must utilize the whole 500 we’ll have had since we took the job. During periods without the team, it's vital to develop bonds with them. We have to spend time communicating regularly, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”
World Cup Qualifiers
He is getting ready ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. England have guaranteed their place at the finals with six wins out of six without conceding a goal. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to strengthen the squad's character, to gain more impetus.
“We are both certain that our playing approach should represent all the positives of English football,” Barry explains. “The fitness, the flexibility, the strength, the integrity. The England jersey should be harder than ever to get but comfortable to have on. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To ensure it's effortless, it's crucial to offer a style that allows them to play freely similar to weekly matches, that connects with them and lets them release restrictions. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.
“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – building from the defense, pressing from the front. However, in midfield of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. All teams are well-prepared now. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.”
Passion for Progress
The coach's thirst for improvement is all-consuming. When he studied for the Uefa pro licence, he had concerns over the speaking requirement, as his cohort included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. So, to build his skill set, he went into difficult settings he could find to practise giving them. One was HMP Walton locally, where he coached prisoners during an exercise.
He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied 16,154 throw-ins – was published. Lampard included convinced and he hired Barry to his team with the Blues. When Frank was fired, it was telling that the team dismissed nearly all assistants while keeping Barry.
His replacement with the club became Tuchel, within months, they secured European glory. When he was let go, Barry stayed on with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he got Barry out from Chelsea and back alongside him. The Football Association consider them a duo like previous management pairs.
