Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Board Resignation
Summers declared he would retreat from public positions after House committee made public his repeated communications with Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is leaving the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.

He remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the opportunity to have participated, optimistic about the potential of the company, and anticipate following their advancement".

The prominent academic, who formerly headed the prestigious university, announced on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the economist exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of young people.

In additional comments, the technology organization stated it accepted the economist's choice to depart.

"We value his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the directors," the organization remarked.

Legislative Background

This announcement arrives after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will then head to the desk of US President Donald Trump for approval. He has stated he intends to endorse the bill, after changing his position on the subject following pushback from his base.

Message Details

A batch of Epstein-connected messages made public by the legislative panel days ago referenced multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any illegal behavior by those people.

The communications showed that the economist and the financier regularly had dinners together, with Epstein often seeking to link the official to notable global figures.

Personal Accountability

After the messages were shared with the general audience, the former official expressed he accepted "full responsibility for my poor judgment to continue communicating with the financier".

He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish faith and mend bonds with the individuals closest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor served in high-level positions under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.

He presided over the institution from five years and is still a professor there. When declaring his step-down from public duties recently on this week, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive policy institute in Washington where Summers was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the group.

He became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a defeated move to replace its top executive Sam Altman.
