The Canadian Team Exonerated of American Allegations of Rigging Bobsleigh Qualifying Race

The Canadian skeleton team have been absolved of accusations that they deliberately manipulated a qualifying event for the Winter Olympics, thereby denying rival athletes a spot to secure their place.

The Core Allegation and Official Inquiry

A prominent American athlete a five-time Olympian accused the team from Canada of withdrawing a majority of its competitors from a race in Lake Placid. The allegation was this reduced the field, making fewer qualifying points available. Despite winning the event, Uhlaender did not secure her qualifying position for the 2026 Olympics.

“Existing federation regulations permit member nations to pull competitors from an event at any time,” declared the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

After reviewing the matter, the federation stated it would not impose sanctions, rejecting the allegations as there was no breach of its code.

Canada's Explanation

Reacting to the claims, the Canadian federation defended the decision, citing athlete welfare and the need for recovery. The organization asserted that some athletes had competed extensively that week and the decision was “appropriate, transparent and aligned with both athlete welfare and the integrity of the sport.”

Representatives of the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had previously expressed “deep worry” about the qualification process.
