The Reason Real Madrid Have 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a key European tie against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and attention.
In only his maiden start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side overcome the English champions in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight place.
At 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is quickly establishing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He signed for Real from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and drive he added to the side.
'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and gave him minutes in pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the clash with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," said the player after his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."
Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the following four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opening.
The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his age and inexperience.
"He's a very quick footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's extremely dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.
"His standout trait is his personality," added Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the possession, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I realize fans might be astonished to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It is delightful to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up deeply involved in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.
He possesses both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, giving him the choice to represent either country at senior international level.
According to international regulations, players may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only final once they appear in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the quarter-finals.
Despite this, he has not yet decided to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision yet. Things are great with Spain, but I will reach a conclusion soon."
This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine chose Spain, Brahim opted to play for the Atlas Lions.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which sealed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with the German champions.
He was replaced by another academy player in Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the club chase future success.
Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We handle it very naturally. I attempt not to overanalyze it excessively - I must deserve my playing time on the field," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
