The Reasons the Duke of York Has Surrendered His Official Honors – and the Implications for the Monarchy
In a statement released by Buckingham Palace, the king's brother has declared he is giving up his official honors, such as his dukedom. Below is an overview of what was announced – and what wasn't.
What Has Andrew Said?
Having already withdrawn as a working royal in 2019, the prince has currently chosen to “take additional measures” and consent not to use the “title or the awards which have been granted to” him.
But he also employed the announcement to make a point of denying – consistent with his past statements – the allegations of misconduct leveled at him; even though having paid out millions to settle the legal claim brought by Virginia Giuffre – a settlement in which he accepted no fault and firmly denied all allegations of improper conduct.
There has existed ongoing scrutiny on the monarchy regarding the claims involving the prince – particularly after his disastrous television appearance with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims that his actions are to safeguard the royal family from further damage caused by media scrutiny.
Has the King Stripped Him of His Titles?
Not at all. And, while this could be dismissed as a simple procedure, it holds importance in multiple ways: initially, it allows Andrew to publicly claim to have behaved with integrity in support of the monarchy. As stated in his statement: “I have chosen, consistent with my past, to prioritize my obligations to my family and the nation first.”
Second, although he consented to abstain from using it, Andrew retains his ducal title, as well as the titles the Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh and the prestigious position as a member of the prestigious order. Like the HRH His Royal Highness honorific, they are effectively inactive.
He remains royalty and eighth in succession to the throne. Theoretically, he is also still a counsellor of state – and can stand in for the sovereign if he is abroad or unwell. However royal officials has indicated that, in practice, he would not be called upon to fulfil this role.
Nonetheless, it is significant that the prince's announcement said this choice was made “following talks with the monarch”. There seems highly likely that, privately, the palace advocated for this in the hope of distancing the institution from Andrew.
Why Was He Not Been Officially Stripped of All of His Titles?
To forcibly remove a dukedom would take an act of parliament, and would constitute such a historic move publicly before the public – it has not occurred to a senior royal in more than 100 years – that it could cause more reputational damage for the royals.
The prince remains still a prince. When he was born in 1960, he became such as the child of the sovereign. This would only be altered if a royal decree was enacted by the king.

There have also been stories about his association with a suspected Chinese spy and, recently, excerpts were published from the posthumous memoir of Giuffre, who took her own life in April. She claimed the prince “believed that having sex with me was his birthright”.
Moreover, the king is due to make a historic visit to see the pontiff next week, during which he will be the first English monarch after Henry the Eighth split with Rome in 1534 to pray publicly with the pope and head of the Catholic church. He would not desire that trip to be marred by further adverse coverage about Andrew.
What Was the Response?
While he said his sister had been “vindicated” by the move, her sibling Sky Roberts has told a newspaper that Andrew’s honorary prince title ought to be removed for “genuine accountability” to be done.
The republican campaign group Republic has also said the action is “insufficient and delayed”, adding: “The prince continues to be accused of sexual misconduct and abuse of office. He should be stripped of every honor and his navy rank and should undergo a legal probe. Refraining from using archaic honors is not a penalty that fits the offences.”
