UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Among Us Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs online presentation revealed a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive game where a girl harboring multiple personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Inside her reside four distinct souls, each with unique fears and motivations. These souls can take over at will, releasing their deep-seated terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the protagonist exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Individual Dread

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal within us. This game delves into that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player experiences.

Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me displays noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their necks should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the body is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. But, because each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The last one standing might be a fraud. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
